| I am Indra's grandmother. I have lived in the Netherlands since 1974. When there was a lot of confusion in Suriname about independence and struggles between the two biggest groups of the population (the Creoles and the Indians) my husband and I came to the Netherlands.
I am a teacher and have always been in front of the class. Suriname has big problems in education because of the different communities that find it difficult to learn and live together. We thought we wouldn't have these problems in the Netherlands. But when I listen to the stories of my granddaughter it seems she faces the same difficulties at school. At Indra’s school there are children with many different backgrounds and they don't always treat each other in a friendly way.
My daughter, Indra's mother, has come with us to the Netherlands and has married a man from another Indian family. It was an arranged marriage because my daughter wanted this herself. |
