It was quite a big shock when Jeroen told us that he’s interested in boys instead of falling for girls. Jeroen is gay. My father got angry and my mother thought that it was just a phase Jeroen had to go through, though I think that my mother already expected it. Karin, my younger sister didn’t say anything. She doesn’t like quarrels.
And me? Well, I had no idea. But he is my brother. What can I do about it? Afterwards my father asked me often if I wanted to take Jeroen along with me to football matches and other ‘manly’ things. I found it really annoying. He wanted to change Jeroen. You know what I mean…?
Finally they got over it with help from a group for parents of homosexual children. But still my father has never totally come to terms with it. |
