| For myself, I only speak Dutch, like all Dutch people I think.
The language used in Jewish religion is Hebrew. Both my grandfathers speak it a little. I think everyone knows the word 'Shalom', which means Peace. Jews use this word to greet one another and to say goodbye. My mother has had Hebrew lessons but that doesn't mean she can speak it right now.
It's very confusing for most people. If people look at me, they think I have no religion at all or they think I'm a Catholic or something. But I'm a Jewish person. Being Jewish means different things for different people. For my mother and myself it has to do with identity. We don't visit the synagogue although my grandfather does. Grandpa also visited Jerusalem also. He visited the Wailing Wall, one of the most sacred places for Jews.
Being Jewish means for us that we know a lot of our history and about the things that happened in the past. We have family meetings on special celebrations throughout the year. And like Christians we also have a day in the week which is different than the rest, the Sabbath. At our home it is not very rigid. We read the newspaper or watch television, like most Christians do on Sunday. Very relaxing. On Sunday we can clean the house or do the laundry. |
