Where do I come from?
Indra: Have you seen the show of Hind last night?
Driss: Hind, who's that?
Indra: Man, you are not cool. You don't know Hind? And you are Moroccan. I thought all Moroccans knew each other.
Driss: Yeah, well you're very naive. Of course I don't know all Moroccans in the Netherlands. There are about 285.000 of them. Do you know how many Surinamese people live in the Netherlands?
Indra: I think about 300.000. I believe the Surinamese are the most diverse, there are Creoles, Indians, Javanese and Chinese. Indians are the biggest group. My parents are Indian so I'm Indian and of course I know all Indian people's names!
Sarah: Is that true? You belong to them? You're not Dutch?
Driss: And you , Sarah? You're Dutch? Or do you call yourself a Jewish Netherlander? There are about 43.000 Jewish people in the Netherlands.
Sarah: Now you're making things complicated. Being Jewish is different from being Surinamese.
Driss: Yes, that's right. Judaism is a religion and Surinamese is a nationality.
Sarah: I don't see it that way. Being Jewish is an identity.
Indra: Now I don't get it any more. Identity is such a difficult word. What is identity? That's about what you believe in, where you come from, things like that, isn't it?
Driss: Yeah. But identity's not fixed. It changes. Because I take being Moroccan with me in the Netherlands I'm changing my Moroccan culture as well as my Dutch culture.
Indra: Well, I think it's still complicated. I prefer to listen to Hind. A Moroccan-Dutch girl. And she's great!!
