Sarah

Welcome to our synagogue. Synagogues look quite ordinary from the outside, but maybe you'll see the Star of David or a text in Hebrew. Inside I want to show you a couple of special things.

The Ark of the Covenant is a beautiful case where our sacred book is being kept, the Torah. Well... book, basically they are two scrolls, all the pages are on a continuous roll and are scrolled around two staffs. That's the way written text was kept in the past. You are not allowed to touch the Torah with your hands.

The wall behind the Ark shows the direction of Jerusalem, our sacred city where once the first Jewish temple was built.

When we assemble in the synagogue there is singing, praying and readings from the thora from that raised position, the Biema. The rabbi is leading the service.

That little light over there is called the Ner Tamid, the eternal light. It gives light just like the words of God may light your life.
